Travel essentials
A few practical things to sort out before you fly in for the celebrations.
India requires almost all foreign nationals to hold a visa to enter the country, and most travellers — including guests from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and the EU — can apply for an e-Visa entirely online rather than visiting an embassy or consulate in person.
Apply through the official government portal at indianvisaonline.gov.in — this is the only site you should use. Third-party sites that look similar often charge extra fees for the same service.
- Apply at least a week or two before you fly — processing is usually quick, but it's worth building in a buffer.
- An e-Tourist Visa is the right category for wedding guests visiting for the celebrations.
- Double-check the exact validity window and number of entries you select, since we're moving between three cities.
- A passport valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival, with two blank pages.
- A recent passport-style photo to upload with your application.
- A copy of your onward/return flight itinerary, in case you're asked for it.
- Separately from the visa, India now requires every foreign national to complete an e-Arrival Card online within 72 hours before landing.
- Submit it at boi.gov.in or via the official "Su-Swagatam" mobile app — it's free and takes a few minutes.
- Save the QR code it generates (screenshot or email it to yourself) — you'll need to show it on arrival, and it can't easily be retrieved if you lose it.
- We'll be travelling Mumbai → Kolkata → Delhi, so plan for domestic flights or trains between cities.
- Currency is the Indian Rupee (INR) — cards are widely accepted in cities, but keep some cash on hand.
- Late January and early February is pleasant, cool travel season across all three cities.
